05/05/06 TwinkleGram from Charlene - A Slip in Time Dear TwinkleGrammers, I recently sent an e-mail regarding a particular project wherein I referred to the fact I was "working the angles." (Sometimes it amazes me how clever I am, knowing angles and all. I mean I got Bs in GEOMETRY in high school--although that's not the kind of angles I was talking about, of course. I pushed the SEND button and off my message went. Ta-DAH! Oh, such a clever me to let someone know how diligently I was, yes, working the angles! (Can you see it coming?) Shortly after sending, I reread the e-mail to make sure I'd mentioned something else, and guess what? Through an errant slip of my fingers I discovered I told him I was "working the angels." Say WHAT?! First I was embarrassed at the typo (since the recipient is a High Literary Type), but now I'm convinced that slip of my finger was actually the angels working ME, reminding me that there is always more going on in, around and through me than I'm aware of. Typos. Slips of the fingers. Slips of humility that mutate into full-blown ego attacks. Oy. Since I am so often at my keyboard, I've discovered over time there are a few typos to which I'm prone. When my fingers are blazing away I find (HOPEFULLY!) that when I'm wanting to say "not" I often typo "now." YIKES! To say I'm now going to do something rather than not going to do it is quite the slip of the promise. I wonder how many times when I DIDN'T catch this before sending my Important Tome that the recipient started standing by waiting, waiting .... Maybe they're still waiting. (If you're one of those people, please take a moment herewith to consider the alternative message I might have communicated--or tried to communicate.) I wish I'd kept a list over the years of all the embarrassing things I've "said" by error. Thank goodness editors catch most of them before going to print! But occasionally (okay very often) I misTYPE (I do know the difference in meaning) sight for site, here for there (YIKES) and role for roll, the latter perhaps sending you somersaulting down a hill rather than stepping up to take charge of your major role. [INTERJECTION: When I completed the above paragraph I recalled a funny incident regarding the here and there snafus. I recently told the story to a wonderful group of ladies in Michigan (Howdy, you newbie TwinkleGrammers from Michigan!) about the T-shirt I once saw that made me laugh out loud. The graphic was of a guy (but picture a gal, okay?) standing in front of a kiosk in the mall. You know how they have the STAR saying, "You are here"? Well, this one said, "You are over there," and there was another picture of him (you) standing in another place. OH! Don't you often feel like that?! I am SO over THERE today!] Perhaps once of the worst offenses was the day I e-mailed a friend promising her I'd pop the bucks for lunch. Guess what? TERRIBLE TYPO, but received by a good friend who--ahem--declined my "gracious invitation" to "poop the bucks for lunch." OY! But today, today I accidentally said I was working the angels, who in actuality are gratefully working me. Bless those angels. Bless my friends who love me when I'm dumb. And bless my fingers, Lord. PLEASE! Until we chat again! Peace and grins, PS If you know someone who might enjoy this message, please feel free to forward it.
